The beauty of EQ is like being with the love of your life. While you do things that please your lover, it will be nice, it will sound pretty, it will make you shine…. Push it toooooo far and you’ll see and ugly side you never knew was there, take too much away and they will be hollow or sound empty. It takes the right touch, the right amount of work and not overwhelming or overdoing things. All that to say, cut the low end of your vocal. I know I went the long way about this but bear with me. While bass and low-end sound great from a kick, 808 or bass line. It makes a vocal sound muddy, unless you are Barry White, and then it may be your best friend. If you aren’t though.... You need to cut it out and go from there. Now, I am not saying that you cut it all the way, just the sub and bass section (20 Hz – 250 Hz). You can leave a little bleed if the voice requires it (*COUGH* Barry White) or to make it sound a bit fuller if the vocal sound a bit to hollow. This will only work if you have a Deep voice. Other than that, you make it sound muffled and boomy. Now, after cutting the low end, you take a knob around the 200 Hz – 500 Hz range and make a sharp or narrow cut wherever needed. Like the picture Below. After than you lower or boost wherever necessary in the remaining frequencies. The Goal is to make your voice sound as natural as possible without the unnecessary noise, bass and ring from your voice. The majority of the vocal will sit between the mid to high mid frequencies and will hopefully not fight with the rest of the instrumentation or other frequencies in the mix.
Anyways, hopefully this helps. Until Next time, STAY BLESSED. Mic-Key

One of the hardest things to work on is a person’s sibilance. For those who may not know or have forgotten, sibilance is defined as: adjective 1. hissing. 2. Phonetics.characterized by a hissing sound; noting sounds like those spelled with s in this[th is] /ðɪs/, rose [rohz] /roʊz/, pressure [presh-er] /ˈprɛʃ ər/, pleasure [plezh-er] /ˈplɛʒ ər/, and certain similar uses of ch, sh, z, zh, etc. --noun 3. Phonetics.a sibilant consonant. For those of us (like me) who need simplifying, it’s the “S” sound. Now, the reason it’s so hard is because each person’s hiss or sibilant is at a different frequency. To all the engineers, I apologize for the PAIN that comes with controlling it, ESPECIALLY without a DeEsser. For us older folk and even those who may have just been producing for a bit, you know the pain of having to control that STUPID “S” sound with an EQ and nothing else. It was horrible! And I ranted. Sorry. Anyways, if you can get control of it, you can make your vocals sound miraculous. A good DeEsser goes a long way, but if you do t have it…. You can use your EQ to do so. Now it may seem a bit extreme in its use but what you have to do works beat with a parametric EQ that is visually (meaning you can see when what frequency is being hit as a person speaks. For the FL studio users the Parametric EQ 2 plugin will work perfectly. So, here is what you do. FIRST, you need to eq your vocals like you would normally do. If you later your ex’s like I do this will work better. (Your first eq working solely as a high pass filter to cut the low end, the second to boost and manipulate the vocal.) You add.You take 2 of the frequency controls. For FL users I will recommend messing with the 5 and 6 eq frequency controllers. For all other dates, it will be the ones in the 1k and 2k frequencies. The next past seems extreme. You make a box with them and lover them. AS. FAR. AS. POSSIBLE. This is to basically cut out the frequency. You then narrow it down to the specific frequency that soars to high heaven every time you make an “S” or hiss sound. This will work in contrast with the eq you used to manipulate the vocal. You’ll be boosting with one and cutting with the other. Again, this is a poor mans DeEsser. It’s also nice to know if you feel like you need to give the DeEsser a bit of help. This is also not a guaranteed solution, since each persons voice is different and you will need to change it to fit the vocal of the artist singing or rapping. As always take care and stay blessed.
