As a person who has mostly created his music at home, I have learned a couple of tricks to make things easier during the mixing process. One of these things is STANDING when you are recording your vocals or the vocalist (singer/rapper) standing during the recording process. Doing this helps with a lot of things but some of the main things it helps with make the process easier.
They go as follows:
1. It Helps the Vocalist hold more air. This allows for the vocalists to not tire out as quickly when singing or rapping. When you sit down, you constrict the airflow to your diaphragm. Now I am not a vocal coach or doctor, but as a recording artist myself, I have found it easier to breath when standing. It gave me more control over the amount of air I could hold in one breath. I was also able to project my voice even more so that I could have a louder sound without the need to scream, giving my voice more clarity. 2. Allows for smoother vocal dynamics If you are an engineer, you will be grateful for this. Have you ever recorded someone and at parts it sounds like their voice drops, or it fluctuates a lot? Remember the vocalist being able to hold air more? Well, it helps you too. If they are able to hold their breath longer, the amount of times their volume fluctuates lessens. Now you can fix this with compression and what not but as we all know, LESS IS MORE. The less you have to do to fix a vocal, the more natural and of better quality it sounds. This allows you to focus on better things than how to fix or repair a vocal clip. 3. Eliminates Extra Noises. So this may have just been me, but when you have an old chair, and you move, there tend to be squeaks with it. You move just enough and your chair is being picked up by the microphone. Well, guess what that does to the recording... I’ll tell you. It. Messes. It. Up. You could get a great take, but the chair noise makes it worthless. So, if you aren’t dependent on a chair or stool, you won’t have to worry about it. Now there are exceptions like of your playing the guitar and what not... but even then, I recommend recording them separately. Either way, standing is a better option. Anyways, thanks for taking the time to read this. Hope it’s of use to you. Stay blessed, Mic-Key

So I have been watching Rhythm and Flow featuring Chance the Rapper, Cardi B and T.I. on Netflix lately and while I watched it, I heard T.I. state the quote above.
SUCCESS IS WHERE OPPORTUNITY MEETS PREPARATION. I heard him say it and it sparked a memory for me. I once had a mentor tell me that time prepared is not time wasted. Both of these sayings work with one another. People feel unprepared during a time of opportunity because they haven't been preparing. The opportunity flops because we don't take the time to prepare ourselves. Now I am not talking about remembering a few lines and what not. I am speaking of honing your craft and enjoying the journey. Artist, creatives, creators, or inventors get caught up in the results that we forget that we enjoy our craft. Only God knows when opportunity comes, but if you give up on it or forget why you do it, you may miss opportunity. You have probably heard this a million times but people tend to quit right before their time comes. Usually due to the low moments life throws at them. We fall so low that we feel or think we know that everything was a pipe dream. Yet, it's always at that moment when you need to push forward. Much like the folks in Rhythm and Flow, you could have T.I. or Cardi or Chance to pop up in your city and give you a chance. Or the most likely of situations, you connect enough with others and after a couple of mistakes and some possible right moves, your time may come. You just can't let life discourage you. There are always lessons to be learned, especially from your own downfalls that you could teach someone else. Anyways, I know I ranted and it may not have made the most of sense, and its different then normal, but hope this inspires you. As Always, Stay Blessed, Mic-Key |
